When To Regrip Your Golf Clubs?

Golf is all about feel and your grips are a major part of feeling your golf swing. Before regripping your clubs, you need to ask yourself what is the ultimate goal in regripping your clubs?

What are your current grips lacking and what value can new grips bring to your game? Ultimately, each golfer needs to decide when it is time to upgrade to new grips. Some may find that they would prefer not to change their grips often while other may need yearly grip replacement.

If you do plan on regripping your clubs, we suggest doing it prior to the season or when playing winds down. The benefit of upgrading your grips will likely be negated by the learning curve of the new grip feel.

It’s also important to keep in mind when you plan on upgrading the clubs you are regripping. In some cases, the most budget friendly option may be to upgrade to a new club with new grip(s) then trading in your old one to offset the cost.

How Long Do Grips Last

Wear and tear on grips depend on a variety of factors including quality of materials, usage, climate, and storage. Grips typically last a couple years for the casual player.

Players who spend time at the golf course more frequently would benefit from annual replacements. Now this doesn’t mean that old grips can’t last for a decade, but performance does deteriorate over time.

A good golf swing relies on a good grip so don’t procrastinate on upgrading your grips when its time, especially when there are so many budget friendly options.

How To Regrip Your Golf Grips

Regripping your golf clubs may seem challenging, but it’s really an easy process. The hardest part is choosing the right grips for your game. The process of swapping out your grips is as simple as the steps below.

Check out the Wedge Guys Golf Grip Kits for Regripping Golf Clubs if you plan on replacing your grips yourself for the first time. The kit comes with everything you need. If you plan on replacing your grips often, I suggest buying these items in bulk to save on cost.

  3. Apply new double sized tape
  4. Tuck tape at the top of the club into the shaft
  5. Drenching the tape and interior grip tube with the solvent
  6. Place the new grip on the shaft and rotate to align
  7. Let the new grip dry for at least 8 hours

Below is a link to our favorite DIY video. It is such a simple process. If you have looked up these DIY videos and have seen a blow torch, stop! You need nothing more than double sided grip tape, grip solvent, a box cutter, and your new grips.

Where To Get Your Clubs Regripped On A Budget?

Not interested in DIY projects? No worries, there are plenty of places that will regrip your clubs, even if you are on a budget. The big box golf stores all offer regripping including Golf Galaxy, PGA Tour Superstore, 2nd Swing, and Dick’s Sporting Goods.

Price depends on location but is typically in the $3 to $5 dollars per club range. If you can be flexible on budget, I recommend a local PGA professional.

The cost difference is typically negligible, and I always skew to supporting local when price is comparable.

Plus, I’ve found that a local PGA professional typically does a better job and can offer more tailored services to fit your golfing needs.

Should I Use the Same Grip for Each Club?

There is no rule or reason why each of your clubs would need to have the same grip. Obviously, this is the case for putter grip but what about other clubs?

Choosing the right grip for each club is always about personal preference but there are some guidelines to consider. Golf is all about consistency and having uniform grips on all 13 clubs in the bag can be a good start on staying consistent.

From a cost standpoint, individually buying grips can be more costly so make sure there is a clear benefit.

However, there is something to be said about different feels for different shots. The swing path and your hand position on the club are different when swinging a driver vs hitting a flop shot.

Different grips can offer different feels and feedback during the swing. I personally have different grips for my wedges than my other irons.

Style and Material

Velvet Golf Grips

Velvet golf grips are the most popular grip for a reason. Most PGA Tour players use velvet style grips due to their feedback, comfort, and the grip reliability in all weather conditions.

Corded Golf Grips

These grips are designed for maximum traction. The name ‘corded’ comes from the design where the cotton cord built into the grip during manufacturing is exposed after sanding down the grips. This exposed cord gives the grip great traction, especially in rainy conditions or for those with sweaty hands.

Wrapped Golf Grips

Wrapped grips simulate the old school leather wrapped grips. These grips are different from the velvet golf grip and the corded grip. They offer a tacky feel not found in other grips.

No active tour players use this style of grips as their standard grip. If you like the feel and look of wrapped golf grips, go for it. If not, I would stick to the standard velvet grips or the corded grips.

Budget Grip Cost

In this article, we defined budget grips as anything under $7 a club. Premium grips typically sell for $10+ dollars per grip so the grips we outline will be 70% that price.

Don’t worry, even though we are looking at grips that are much cheaper than typical grips, we didn’t sacrifice on quality. These grips we covered above pack a big punch at a budget price.

Grip Size Types

The size of the grip is an important consideration when deciding on grips. Golf grips come in different sizes including Standard size, Midsize, Oversize, Undersize, and Junior.

Beyond the grip size, the number of tape layers under the grip can factor into grip size. Choosing the right grip size mainly depends on hand size. Large hands should skew towards a larger grip or oversize grips. Whereas smaller hands can opt for standard or undersized grips.

Final Thoughts

Choosing a new set of grips for your golf clubs can feel overwhelming but with so many great choices, you really can’t go wrong with any new set of grips. Your final decision should consider all the various factors covered above to find the best new grips for your game.

Whether you change your grips on your own or opt for a professional, upgrading your grips takes very little time and you will see a benefit to your game almost immediately. Hopefully, you found our reviews above to be helpful.
