Delcastle Golf Course (Players Guide)

The Delcastle golf course is a public golf course located in northern Delaware. Located at 801 McKennans Church Rd, Wilmington, DE 19808, the course comes complete with 18 holes, driving range, putting area, and even a mini golf course. Opened in 1971 and designed by Edi Ault, this par 72 course has something to offer every golfer. Delcastle offers excellent value for golf patrons in the area. The course is well maintained and is playable for all types of golfers, from beginners to seasoned players.

If you are looking for a detailed overview of Delcastle and its facilities, we have you covered. The article below will outline all you need to know about golfing at Delcastle Golf Course. From practicing at the start of your round to the 19th hole.

Course Difficulty

The length of the course is manageable for short hitters and scorable for those who hit the long ball. The course plays wide open on most holes, making it difficult to lose a ball. Wide fairways and short cut rough allow for the inevitable mishit. Green speeds on most days are reasonable. They are not quick by any means but do roll true.

Hazards on the course are limited. A few holes do have water, but water hazards on the course do not come into play for the average golfer. Bunkers are maintained as well as any other public course. They are playable but some are washed out on occasion.

Pace Of Play

As with most public course, Delcastle gets a lot of play during peak hours. Busy hours on the course can play slow at 5+ hours per round. However, the course does a good job of facilitating play with starters on the first tee and a ranger on the course.

At nonpeak hours, it is reasonable to play a round in 4 to 5 hours as a foursome. Anecdotally, every time I have played this course, the groups ahead of me and behind me have always been courteous. Slow groups do tend to let faster groups play through.

Facilities

Putting Green

Located behind the pro-shop, Delecastle offers a modest putting green for practice. The green is great for preparing for your round but is not an ideal set up for short game practice. If you are looking for a facility to practice your short game, this set up will leave something to be desired.

Driving Range

Delcastle offers an excellent driving range facility. For those new to the course, it’s important to note that the driving range facility is not located at the same address. The driving range and mini golf area are located at 3601 Millcreek Rd, Wilmington, DE 19808, a short 5 min drive from the pro shop.

Located a quick 5-minute drive from the course, the driving range offers 50+ bays on artificial matts. Around 15 of these bays have covering for rainy days.

The range hours are from 7:00am to dusk, allowing for practice at all times during the day. Note that this is a cash-only driving range. Buying balls is as simple as entering your credit or debit card into a ball dispenser. Range rates are comparable to other driving ranges in the area, although are on the pricier side.

Range Rates:

  • Small Bucket – $8
  • Medium Bucket – $14
  • Large Bucket – $17

Food and Beverage

Just as important as the course itself, is the amenities it offers. Connected to the pro-shop is a restaurant and bar. The restaurant offers typical bar food that is perfect to refuel at the turn or to relax at after you finished your round.

As with nearly all golf courses, no outside alcohol is allowed on the course. Although that should not be a problem. Beverage prices are very reasonable, and coolers are available for beer taken on the course.

Worried about running out of your favorite snack or beverage while playing your round? Do not worry, Delcastle has you covered. There is a beverage cart that services the course on busier days. This is an excellent service that is not often found on public courses.

Non-Golf Facilities

Although not essential, many golf courses boast non-golf facilities. In Delcastle’s case, they do not have many non-golfing facilities. They do offer a mini golf course at the driving range location, but they do not have a pool or tennis courts.

One reason for not having these other amenities is that it is located directly next to Delcastle Recreational Park. The park offers miles of paths for walking, indoor tennis courts, and many other sports and recreational activities. If you are looking for something for the family to do while you golf, Delcastle is the perfect course for you.

Summary

Delcastle is a great public course for golfers of all ages and experience. The course offers great value to its patrons and is a must visit for anyone traveling to the area.
